Vogue Footwear - designed in St. Louis

Vogue wedge heel in teal and brown

If you follow us on social media, you've seen us blowing it up about Vogue Footwear! We've teamed up with them to share a little social media love, they even blogged about Scarlett Garnet on their site. If you Like them on Facebook, you'll get a code for $20 off your online order with free shipping. Or you can stop into the Scarlett Garnet storefront at 2619 Cherokee Street for a limited selection of their hot heels.

But let me tell you about the shoes....
Win 'Em All Boot by Vogue Footwear

I admit, I usually buy boots from Marshalls or the Value Village Thrift Store.  But now that I've tasted the good life of good boots, I'm not going back.  A quick tour of these beauties-

The colorful design is handpicked this southwest blanket wool from the mill in Woolrich, Pennsylvania. The print and texture go perfect with our Spaghetti Western Sunset Line.  Pair these with our Multi Metal Chevron Necklace- ride em cowgirl!  You will be planning your entire outfit around these babies.

The platform is 1" high, and the heel is 4 1/4" high, so you're really on walking on about 3" of heel.  What differentiates Vogue is that these heels are so sturdy and properly aligned.  I have no problem walking on huge heels, but when the heel spike isn't supporting you at the right part, or the slope is molded wrong, I find it hard to walk gracefully.  And I hate life by the end of the day when my dogs are barking.

The deal-breaker: it has added padding at the ball of your foot. A little built in cushion keeps your foot from sliding and softens the blows of your power walk.  No more trying to stick those goofy little inserts into your shoe.

Vogue has placed a logo on the back of the instep. I love this little added luxury look.

Here is me, rocking the awesome boots at Cinco de Mayo on Cherokee Street in St. Louis.  All kinds of people were shouting, "Nice boots, girl!"

Zodiac Line: Cancer Necklace

Cancer

June 21 - July 22

Cancer is the 4th sign of the Zodiac, ruled by the Moon, the Great Mother of the heavenly bodies, water is their element. The Moon is also the ruler of moods, and Cancers can be overly sensitive, easily hurt and prone to brooding.  At the same time, they're very nurturing, empathetic and are quick to show their affection.

When we were looking for a Cancer model, my friend Jill McKeever immediately came to mind. Not only is she beautiful, she's also the most Cancerian person I know.  She is the "mother" of my friend group, always looking for ways to help us when we need anything.  She runs her own online business, For Strange Women, and creates natural perfume and other products using Mother Earth's finest ingredients.   I was thrilled when she agreed to be our model and I designed the necklace with her as my muse. Just like Jill, the crab is tiny, mysterious and delicate however, in reality, it's made of steel, stronger than meets the eye.  The Zodiac Stone for Cancer is emerald, the stone of true love and loyalty, amongst other things.  This necklace has 3 faceted emerald beads, two hung asymmetrically on the sides of the pendant and one on the 2 inch extender chain.  The chain is black and brass shimmer chain and the extender chain and findings are antique brass in finish.  The Cancer Zodiac Necklace is available for sale on our website, scarlettgarnet.com.

The tough, sand blasted stainless steel pendant is reminiscent of the Cancer's rough outer shell, it's home, where it hides safely from all harm. Home is one of the most important things in a Cancer's world, they are domestic, maternal, dependable and caring by nature. Their home must be perfect to suit their needs and reflect their personalities as they spend most of their time in the comforts of their home and family. A Cancer's shell is a metaphorical second home, they are quick to retreat based upon their moods. Cancers are known to be crabby and it's best to let them be and not disturb them in these moments of hermit retreat. After all, they will always resurface, refreshed and ready to socialize and play again.

Cancers love to nurture others, they're loyal, dependable and caring.  If you form a friendship with a Cancer, it's prone to last for life.  Cancers take a long time to trust others and would rather maintain the relationships they've already formed rather than let anyone new in.  Cancers wear their hearts on their sleeves and look for quality people to surround themselves with, preferring to have fewer friendships rather than spread themselves thin with acquaintances.

Due to their watery nature, Cancers have keenly intuitive minds.  They can read people very well, often reading between the lines of what others say and how they say it along with studying their mannerisms.  Cancer is known to 'test' others before committing to friendship, as they are deeply sensitive and easily hurt, they choose to protect themselves by keeping their distance at first.  With their powers of observation, intelligence and intuition, Cancers have tremendous success in anything they set out to do.

Cancers need to be needed by the special people they allow in to their lives. They also need constant support and encouragement. When cancer gets the support it needs, it has a tremendous amount to offer in return. Cancer is also very possessive, not just with material items but also with people. They offer unconditional love and loyal, lasting friendship.

Cancers are amongst the most mysterious of the Zodiac signs.  You are a lucky person to have one on your side as you will have a friend for life, one who will protect you and comfort you as long as you are a good, trusting friend in return.  They make the most romantic lovers and are sure to give everything they can in relationships.  As a Gemini, I have found that it's best to listen to Cancers as they will bestow you with wisdom as long as you a receptive.  I am a lucky person to call Jill my friend and I look forward to a lasting friendship no water what dirrection life pulls us in.

Ice Cream Social!

During my recent trip to the West Coast, I visited one of our top secret super awesome suppliers and found some fun, flirty aluminum chains in light green and purple.  They instantly became my muse, as chains and stones often do, but these chains were begging for the spotlight.  With summer right around the corner, I knew they had a home in a future Scarlett Garnet collection.  I paired them with some neutral tone chains and a theme was born!  The light green and brushed brass aluminum chains paired perfectly and reminded me of mint chocolate chip ice cream.  The purple looked oh so demure when paired with the dark grey aluminum chain and screamed raspberry sorbet.  For a "Lactard" (my term for a lactose intolerant individual), these thoughts of ice cream seemed kind of crazy but I knew I had to go with the flow of the creative juices.

I had no choice but to showcase these fabulous colorful chains.  I immediately thought of a bracelet design, combining some nouveau styled cut metal as the ornate clasps and closures.  The aluminum chains are so light and I knew that I could get away with some serious volume so I went for it - a 10 chain bracelet was born!  Inspired by Katie's love of asymmetry, I made sure to come up with a random yet clever and eye pleasing color pattern.  To mix things up, we included a new finish to the stainless steel nouveau components - sand blasting!  This gives the stainless steel a matte, darker finish, just what the sparkly colored chains needed to keep them in check.

But why stop there?  This Lactard was in heaven, I got to have my ice cream and eat it too???   The lightness of the aluminum chains proved too perfect an opportunity to pass up on some seriously big, colorful and dangly earrings. Although they look massive, they truly are light as air.

Some of our lines are so "serious", combining ancient cultures, history and Nouveau/Deco with unusual gemstones and semi-precious metals.  Katie and I were ready for something relaxed and fun yet still encompassing our signature style.  The nouveau cut metal components have a sort of circus look which ads to the theme of fun, however, they still represent our unique point of view.  The colorful chains add the funky flair that this summer needs.  And, who doesn't love ice cream?

After creating a finished product, the next step is to hire an amazing photographer.  When Scarlett Garnet was a gallery/studio in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City, we shared the space with M&E Photo Studio.  They were the talent behind our Spaghetti Western Sunset Line photography.  Having since moved on to bigger and better locations, both businesses have been working hard and focusing on growth.  As the Universe often re-crosses our paths, Emily Lodigensky (the E of M&E) and I have been bumping into each other so often this Year of the Snake that a collaboration seemed to be in the cards.

Emily Lodigensky, hard at work, capturing the moment and the jewelry.

It takes a village to make a perfect photo shoot.  One of my BFF's, Tara Milleville, offered to photo assist.  She's a natural, as we discovered during the Black Forest Nouveau photo shoot, but doesn't know it yet.  Thanks, Scrappy T, for shining the light where it's needed!

We met to discuss the details of the shoot, Emily suggested the PERFECT location, the bridal suite in the Bauer Building (formerly the Art's Incuabator in the KC Crossroads), and I found the perfect models.  Scarlett Garnet NEVER uses card carrying career models, rather we focus on real women, usually our friends and acquaintances, the people who support us, inspire us & look awesome in our jewelry.  Nancy Lee Ayala Rush, a KC vocal talent and beauty, who also just happens to have purple highlights, was my go-to-girl for Raspberry Sorbet.  Tonia Barksdale, an up-and-coming KC clothing designer and old neighbor of mine was our Mint Chocolate Chip.  The girls were happy to model and they were AMAZING!!  They truly had fun, looked fabulous, and got to eat the ice cream in the end.

Nancy Ayalla looking demure as Raspberry Sorbet.

Katie and I personally could not be any happier with this new line, our models and the photography!  What a visual treat!  We'll virtually launch our new line on the Summer Solstice, June 21st.

Please join us for our physical launch in Kansas City on June 27th at one of our all time favorite boutiques, Colfax, in Westport.  We will not only have our new line available for purchase but will also have an array of all our past lines and one-of-a-kinds available.  We will also be raffling off a free piece of jewelry!  In addition, Boulevard Brewery, our sponsor, is providing free Wheat and Pale Ale for those age 21 and over.  Did I mention there's also free ice cream?  And cupcakes?

Happy Summer 2013 - let the fun begin!!

Stay tuned for the Saint Louis launch at our beloved Cherokee Street store front, mid-July.  Who knows, we may just add a few more Ice Cream Social flavors...

XOXO for now!

Two Geminis, One Jewelry Company

When Garnet and I first met almost 7 years ago (virtually, of course, as we still lived in separate cities back then) we realized that we are both Geminis.  It seems to explain a lot about why we do what we do and why we get along so well.

When looking up descriptions of Gemini, I found this, "When a Gemini matches up with another Gemini it’s usually a miracle because the two of you would burn each other out instantaneously but it would be a good time while it lasted" (astro-counseling.com)  I feel like perhaps Garnet and I have abated this by being in different cities.  The distance could have killed other business partners, but for two strong willed Geminis it works. Maybe because we talk less regularly than cubicle-buddies, we are able to even out the highs and lows of the volatile Gemini tendencies.

I have always felt like I had dueling interests, both sides of the Gemini at work.  In high school and college, I focused on scholastic pursuits with a major in biology, pre-med.  But I still was taking several philosophy and fine-art classes and performing with the dance team.  I could enjoy staying up all night studying the mechanisms of glycolysis but could dance all night at college parties too.  I love to be an extrovert, on stage performing, but was also to be the solid voice of reason and quiet ear to many a friends' dramas in life and love.

Garnet and I share the Gemini personality trait of creatively beating to our own drummer.  Perhaps I have not felt as much of a rebellion feeling as Garnet does, but I think we both have had the "to hell with convention" attitude that sets Scarlett Garnet on its own path.  There are a few more qualities of Geminis that make us perfectly suited to become jewelry designers.  For one, Geminis like new challenges are quick to jump to the next idea, aligning us perfectly with creating new jewelry components on a regular basis.  And second, Geminis are good at pairing those mental skills with manual dexterity- meaning a talent with one's hands, perfect for jewelry design.  Lastly, Geminis are social butterflies and tell energetic stories, making them perfect genuine salewomen!

To start sketching the Gemini Necklace, I wanted to get away from the often used images of two twin girls, and a numeral much like the Roman II.  I share a birthday (June 13) with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen...so enough with the literal Gemini twins.  I wanted to create a pendant that represented two personalities overlapping and coinciding, not two distinct pieces that were separate.  Hence the overlapping swirls came to shape.  The diamond shape is one I often find myself drawing, and the swirls took several turns before landing on the final design.

We partnered with the photographer Meagan Huth of High Spektical Photography for product shots.  I was uber impressed with her crazy portraits and art photos, as well as her willingness to capture a client's vision.  She also runs a super dope vintage clothing store on Cherokee Street, just blocks from our St. Louis storefront, that doubles as her photo studio.

I originally wanted to have Garnet and I be the models for the Gemini Necklace, but time constraints made it difficult for GG to be in STL before the launch online of the necklace.  I looked briefly for another Gemini to be my twin, but in the end, I got to be my own twin!

Two exposures on one frame made for some ghostly conversation

In addition to these double exposure shots, we also did long exposures with a flash that would make two images appear on the same photo. We had a lot of fun playing with all the different techniques and ways to line up within the frame.

A couple weeks later. we were invited by Google (yes, Google! More to come on that) to be filmed for a special project.  Garnet made plans to come to STL, and we got to hook up with Meagan again for a true Gemini Twin shoot.  Garnet and I had opposite ombre hair color, I created the allusion of bangs, and we painted our nails the same shade of emerald green.  Back in 2010, Garnet and I each separately picked out the same dress, by Always the Forest, out of hundreds of vendors the Renegade Craft Fair.  Early in the morning, Garnet and I donned our twinsies best and met with Meagan on Cherokee street to shoot.

The shoot was quick with wicked results.  We always try to look different when we are both representing SG at a show, so it was fun to intentionally attempt to look the same for once!

Simple 7 Rule -Get Active. Be App Active

Apps to help you achieve

The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week.  30 minutes a day, 5 times a week! That can be a challenge for a lot of women- either she doesn't feel like she has enough time, or she doesn't have enough energy.  And if a lady hasn't been getting any activity, reaching that amount can seem impossible.

I have a few suggestions, from personal experience and from other busy creative type friends, that can help even you get moving!

The St. Patrick's Day Run through downtown St. Louis- good training goal!

Couch to 5K-
My friend Melissa LOVES the "5K Runner" app.  Can you jog for 1 minute?  You will jog 3 miles!  Over 8 weeks, you alternate jogging and walking, from 1 minute at a time up to the whole 5K.  Melissa listens to music on her iPhone, and the app quiets the music to instruct you to start running or to walk.  It helps you take the baby steps to toward that 5K that seem impossible. It allows you to jog at your own pace, and enjoy your music without checking your watch.

For those less smartphoned, this blog post by the Scarlet Words has a printable schedule and real-life tips to make it easier.  You may just be amazed by what you can do!

I started jogging again at the beginning of February.  Although I have jogged regularly before, it is still soooo hard to get back on the wagon, even after a small break.  Carving out the time in the morning may mean getting to the store later or having less time to get cute.  But I have been gradually getting up earlier so I can work in a 35 minute run and then a quick shower.  I talk myself out of bed by saying, "This is the only time all week that is just my time.  I have to do it!" I like jogging in the morning. It doesn't give me a chance to get distracted by other things, or think I need to keep working on business stuff rather than taking a break to run.

The Freaky Alarm App- You'll want to throw your phone across the room, but at least you're up on time!

Making more time in your day-
How do I wake up so early?  This alarm clock app!  The Freaky Alarm forces you to wake up, rather than silencing your phone and drifting back indefinitely into a sleepy abyss (because I never do that…not).  You have to answer mental math questions and do touch screen tasks, so your brain is awakened and you start thinking about your exciting day, which will hopefully include 30 minutes of physical activity!  Honestly, the alarm app is insanely annoying, but it works to get you out of snoozeville and into your new day, no matter what time of day.

Simple 7 Rule - Eat Better. Sharpening the Saw

Watch yo hands!

One of the things that makes eating a lot of fresh fruit and veggies more fun is an awesome knife! My roommate, Rosa's, father gave her a ceramic Shenzhen chef knife for the holidays, and it has rocked our world since.  It comes with its own instructions and warnings, but once you feel how easy it is to slice through a crisp cucumber with ceramic, you'll never go back to steel.

Every time we rave about how much we like using the new knife, my roomie snaps a photo to send to her father (above).
Row boat salad bowl available at Uncommongoods.com

If you've wanted to eat more fresh vegetables and fruit, but seem daunted by the amount of time it takes to prep and cut them, bring in something new to make it fun.  Not that you should go out and buy a whole new Ginsu knife set, but having a new cutting board, salad spinner, a pretty new salad bowl, even a new seasoning will make prepping healthy food that much more fun.

The photo positive reinforcement doesn't hurt either. :)

Simple 7 Rule - Eat Better. Eat your (Artichoke) Heart Out

You can't eat too many vegetables, and people don't get fat or lessen their heart health from eating too many vegetables.

I know. Technically, you can eat too much of anything, and you could put on some poundage with over-processed or deep-fried veggies or dips.  But I keep this mantra in my head when I'm thinking about cooking for the week.  I don't plan out my meals, but I know that if I load up my cart with fruit and vegetables, there are limitless combinations I can put together, and I can eat as much of it at a time as I want.  I can GO TO TOWN on a bowl of roasted brussel sprouts guilt free.  And I can happily munch while updating Etsy at my computer on apple slices, rather than the chips that I default crave.

Here are a couple of my current obsessions that I make several times a week, and a couple of hints that may help you get over some little obstacles.

Lots of seasoning and a vintage plate.

Roasted Zucchini

- Pre-heat the oven (or toaster oven if you're living small!) to 400 degrees.
- Slice 2 zucchinis into 1/2" thick rounds.  (For me, this the key.  Zukes sliced too thin and cooked get majorly wimpy and limpy and don't hold the flava as well.  Sliced thicker, and this squash has a crunchy outside and a hot and juicy inside that makes their natural flavor and your spices explode.)
- In a bowl (or even on the pan- who needs a middle man to clean?)  toss zukes with 1TB olive oil (or your fave oil of choice, I am obsessed with sesame oil right now too).  If you don't like to measure ingredients while cooking (I don't), its better to go with less oil than more, because these puppies will be plenty juicy.
-Add on pepper, a pinch of salt, oregano, and maybe something a little spicy if you like- maybe some cayenne or chipotle pepper.
-Bake for 8 minutes, flip the zukes on the pan, and bake for 5 minutes more, give or take to your preferred crispiness. I think they are perfect just before they start to get translucent.
-Serve hot on a cute little vintage plate!

This concoction barely warrants a literal recipe, its that easy and open to interpretation.

I love to save some for my lunch the next day, knowing my future self will really appreciate my current self for creating healthy tupperwares of vegetables that are ready to grab on a busy morning.

While you're chopping, make one for your rommie or for later.

Sexy Mexi Salad

-Spinach
-Romaine or other crunchy dark green lettuce.  (Go bagged if you need to.  I know. I want to shop at Farmer's markets every weekend and buy those big beautiful leafy greens too, and I often do.  But if you find that you aren't getting to all those pretty cruciferouses wilting in your fridge because you aren't finding the time to pluck, clean, dry and chop, just go right ahead and buy the bagged, and preferably organic, lettuce and broccoli, etc.  We are talking about your HEART HEALTH here, ladies.  Lets take out all the obstacles and get right to it.)
-Avocado, soft
-Tomato
-Cilantro
-Red pepper
-Canned corn or roasted corn (or frozen- see below)
-Red Onion
-Salsa
-Any other fruit or veggies in your fridge or freezer you need to use up.  Frozen peas? Throw them on.  Strawberries with 1 more day of prime eating? Slice em up.  Cucumber nub? Chop chop.  Some frozen veggies will thaw more nicely than others in time for your lunch, but just start trying a few!

Chop all of the above up, toss, then drizzle with your favorite salsa. Don't worry about the cheese, it doesn't add much flavor, and you've got so much going on here, you won't even miss it (or the calories). Forget about the dressing- your salsa and chopped fruits will provide enough juice.  If I am bringing my lunch to work, I try to keep the salsa and other juicy cuts separate from the lettuce in my tupperware by barricading them into a corner with the red peppers.  And if I find myself getting a little sick of chewing spinach all the time, I go heavier on the other ingredients and forget the rules of a traditional salad.  Whatever it takes for you to enjoy your salad and want to keep making more.

Whatever you have to do to eat more apples in the afternoon.

Sliced Apples

-Clean apple
-Cut into slices

I'm just joking.  But seriously, I eat way more apples now that I slice them.  I just never wanted to bite into one.  It bothered my dry lips.  But now I eat one almost every day.

Go Red for Women- Ourselves!

When we originally posted the Anatomical Heart Necklace last year, we emphasized the symptoms that women have, in contrast to men, when experiencing a heart attack. Garnet told the story of her mother, Nancy Lee in a previous blog post. We spoke about heart disease as the #1 killer of women, and that women should educate themselves.

This year, as we started the design and marketing for the Heart Nouveau Necklace and linking to all the "Go Red For Women" and American Heart Association's recommended Life Simple 7 information, I started thinking.  If we were going to be talking about education and healthy lifestyles, we really needed to be practicing what we preached!

The Heart Nouveau Necklace, with benefits going to American Heart Association

Garnet and I are both fairly healthy women.  If we are together for business for a few days, we stock up on salad fixings, nuts, fruit, and maybe some wine. Ok, and some dark chocolate.  Even while travelling, we try to hold out for healthy options.  We hunt down the nearest Arby's for their Market Fresh sandwiches, and a Panda Express is our mecca for their steamed veggies.   We both jog, at our very different paces, and try to work that in to an insane travel schedule.

Road trip to Austin, TX for the Renegade Craft Fair.  Peanut Butter Puffin cereal, banana chips and Omega-3 Trail Mix are perfect color match with Scarlett Garnet Jewelry, and the healthy road trip snack while assembling jewelry from the passenger seat.

As entrepreneurs, we feel the pressure to be working all the time.  There is always more jewelry to assemble, stones to wrap, emails to write, social media to update, writing to tweak, photos to edit, planning to do, supplies to order, show applications to complete….and on.  While we don't have children or a traditional 9-5 job, we do have this one big baby that has two websites and an Etsy store and is all over social media and around town.  I know I often have the bizarre day dream that I could get caught up if I just didn't sleep for the next week, but obviously that is not realistic, or heart healthy.

We have decided to take this opportunity to share with our fans how we try to follow Life's Simple 7. We aren't perfect or experts.  We don't have the kitchens of Rachel Ray or the self control of saints.  I've totally devoured an entire bag of kettle corn in one sitting and I've accepted that.  We don't have the time management skills of that "Getting Things Done" David Allen dude, but we squeeze in what we can of Life's Simple 7 into our everyday routines.  Hopefully, by sharing, we can help some other women make the commitment to their own heart health..
